Online Workshops on Research and Publishing Skills

The Oxus Society for Central Asian Affairs and the Centre for Research & Graduate Education, Kazakh-German University, Almaty, are launching a new series of online workshops on research and publishing skills for early career researchers.

Topics include research design, writing for a policy audience, writing peer-reviewed journal articles and research ethics.

The workshops are open to citizens of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. All applicants must have a PhD or be enrolled in a PhD program. We strongly encourage applications from those currently studying for a PhD or who have received their PhD in the last five years.

Our first workshop will be focused on how to translate your research into short pieces for media outlets and how to write an op-ed article. It will be led by founder of Vlast.Kz journalist Vyacheslav Abramov on 20 and 27 May at 19 hrs Almaty time. The workshops will be held on Zoom and be in Russian.

The deadline for applications is 20 April.

Our second workshop in this series will focus on how to prepare a manuscript for a high impact factor peer-reviewed scientific journal. It will be led by Erica Marat, Associate Professor and Department Chair at National Defense University in Washington, DC. The workshop will be held on 23 June at 19 hrs Almaty time. It is open to advanced MA students, MA graduates, PhD students and early career researchers who completed their PhDs in the past 5 years. If there is a sufficiently high demand, a second workshop will be held on 30 June likewise at 19 hrs, focusing on junior scholars, while the first workshop would then focus on more advanced early career scholars at PhD level already. So, save both dates if you are interested! The workshop(s) will be held on Zoom and be in Russian. Participants must also be fluent in English.

The deadline for applications is 27 May.
