Alexander Maier is a PhD student in the Department of Anthropology at Columbia University. His research focuses on the history of undocumented labor migration in the former Soviet Union and the social lives of Central Asian migrant workers in Russia. He is broadly interested in the political economy of postsocialism, the politics of mobility and migration, and the ethnography of bureaucracy and the law.
