State-Building in Kazakhstan: Continuity and Transformation of Informal Institutions

Author: Dina Sharipova  Category: Central Asia, Culture, Kazakhstan, Politics  Publisher: Lexington Books  Publication Date: 2018  Language: English

This study challenges the conventional wisdom that informal institutions—networks, clientelism, and connections— disappear in modern societies due to the processes of liberalization and industrialization. Using Kazakhstan as a case study, Sharipova shows that informal reciprocal institutions continue to play an important role in shaping people’s everyday lives.
