Since the attacks of 9/11, extremist “East Turkestan” forces have grown more fragmented and isolated. Some of these organizations have an increasingly prominent tendency of “jihadization,” and their threats are still on the rise; others have merged with the relatively moderate “East Turkistan” separatist organizations to speed up the integration process. This paper analyzes these new trends and their driving forces, while the influence of the “World Uyghur Congress” is expanding.
